Jackfruit There’s nothing poor about this so called “poor man’s fruit.” Smooth as custard, with hints of pineapple, cantaloupe and banana, the jackfruit is the largest tree-borne fruit in the world—reaching up to 36 kg (80 lbs) in weight. The fruit’s exterior is green or yellow when ripe. The interior consists of large edible bulbs of yellow flesh that encloses a smooth, oval, light-brown seed that is white and crisp within and reminiscent of chestnuts.
Native to Brazil, the jackfruit is difficult to categorize — exotic yet accessible, hard yet soft, sweet yet smokey. Different varieties and fruit parts yield different taste sensations. High in fiber and used in everything from smoothies, milkshakes and sweets to chips and curry, jackfruit’s versatility is part of its attraction and one of its most flavorful attributes.
